The Now Web is synchronous -- and synchronous tends to favor urgency over importance, drama over efficiency. Phone calls and IMs are to email what the NYT Stream is to the NYT home/front page: More now/synchronous/exciting, but arguably less efficient. Do we choose the excitement of urgency -- over importance? The excitement and human drama of waiting in line at the Apple Store -- and watching a crowd draw a crowd -- is less efficient than waiting a couple days to buy the Apple Thing a couple days after launch with no line. When does excitement & drama trump efficiency? And when does it not?

Dear Indra Nooyi, are you going to sell corn syrup water for the rest of your life? You write in Fortune about Corporate America rebuilding trust and building "sustainable relationships" with consumers. Please don't back that up with some lame CSR, or selling fattening junk cheaper, or innovative ways to make people unhealthy. You write about values and ethical ideals. Let's see what you can do.

I'm a big fan of Douglas Rushkoff. His work has been a big influence on me -- from Media Virus to Coercion to Nothing Sacred. Now he's got a new one, "Life Inc" (amazon)

Dear David Brooks, I liked your "long voyage" column, but community-building isn't at odds with freedom. Community comes from cowboy-like initiative. Community happens when people have freedom. Individualism and freedom leads to community entrepreneurialism, not just business entrepreneurialism. Individuals, free to self-organize -- into business AND community forms --- solve their own and others' problems. The yearning to be free is a yearning to be effective, powerful, and in control of one's destiny -- sometimes yearning for maximum profit, sometimes yearning to achieve other goals. That "complex web of institutions" you write about includes, for example, webs of women who grabbed their freedom to assemble and associate and have self-organized into thousands of Moms Meetups to solve all kinds of problems. That's not market/capitalist freedom, nor liberal communitarianism, nor expert-driven central engineering. It's simply untrammeled freedom that produces "the good life" you write about.
